🔍 Model Background

The Mercury Verado 400R outboard (2015–2020) was developed by Mercury Racing as a high-performance variant of the standard Verado lineup. It featured a heavily modified version of the 2.6L inline-6 Verado block paired with a larger supercharger, upgraded internals, and a custom ECU calibration to deliver 400 horsepower at the crank.

Targeted at performance center consoles, stepped-hull sport boats, and offshore racing applications, the 400R was engineered for speed and responsiveness. It offered Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), electro-hydraulic steering, and optional Sport Master gearcase for high-speed surface-piercing prop setups.

Despite its race-bred heritage, the 400R retained many of the comfort and reliability features of the Verado platform, including Advanced MidSection (AMS) for vibration reduction and compatibility with SmartCraft digital gauges and Mercury Joystick Piloting.

Production of the inline-6 400R ended around 2020, when Mercury Racing transitioned to the newer V8 and V10 platforms. However, the 400R remains a popular option among speed-focused boaters and is still supported with parts and service through Mercury Racing dealers.
