🔍 Model Background
The Mercury 90 HP Four Stroke outboard (2014–2021) was built on Mercury’s lightweight and efficient 2.1L inline-4 platform, the same engine family that powered the 115 HP model. At just 359 lbs, it was one of the lightest 90 HP four-stroke engines in its class, making it ideal for aluminum fishing boats, pontoons, bay boats, and skiffs where weight, fuel efficiency, and reliability are critical.
Featuring multi-port Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), dual overhead cams (DOHC), and a maintenance-free valve train, the 90 Four Stroke offered smooth power delivery, excellent midrange torque, and very low vibration levels. Its compact design and class-leading power-to-weight ratio made it especially popular for repower applications where older 2-strokes were being replaced.
This model supported both mechanical and SmartCraft digital controls, and it came with a top-mounted oil filter and other service-friendly features. Between 2014 and 2021, the Mercury 90 Four Stroke earned a reputation as one of the most dependable mid-range outboards ever built, thanks to its simplicity, durability, and everyday usability.
