🔍 Model Background
The Mercury 60 HP 2-Stroke outboard (1986–2002) was a widely used and highly respected engine built on Mercury’s reliable 3-cylinder 2-stroke platform. Known for its simplicity, light weight, and strong performance, this model was a popular choice for aluminum fishing boats, small center consoles, pontoons, and skiffs throughout the late 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.
Featuring oil injection (Precision Blend), CDM ignition, and traditional carburetion, the 60 HP 2-stroke offered quick throttle response and easy maintenance. It was available in multiple configurations, including manual or electric start, tiller or remote steering, and standard or Bigfoot gearcase variants for added thrust on heavier boats.
Though later phased out in favor of 4-stroke and DFI models to meet EPA emissions standards, the 1986–2002 Mercury 60 remains a favorite among DIY boaters and mechanics due to its mechanical reliability, wide parts availability, and excellent power-to-weight ratio. Many units are still in service today, particularly in freshwater environments.
