🔍 Model Background
The Mercury 55 HP 2-Stroke outboard (1986–2002) was a lightweight, reliable midrange engine built on Mercury’s proven 3-cylinder 2-stroke platform. Sharing many components with the 50 HP and 60 HP models of the same era, the 55 HP variant offered a balance of simplicity, strong low-end torque, and easy serviceability — making it a popular choice for small boats, runabouts, and aluminum fishing rigs.
This model featured carbureted fuel delivery, CD ignition, and oil injection (Precision Blend), eliminating the need for pre-mixing while ensuring smooth performance across the RPM range. Available with manual or electric start and either tiller or remote steering, the 55 HP was versatile and well-suited to a wide range of freshwater and coastal marine applications.
While it was eventually phased out due to tightening emissions regulations and the rise of 4-stroke and DFI alternatives, the Mercury 55 HP 2-stroke remains well-regarded for its mechanical reliability, lightweight design, and robust aftermarket support. Many continue to run today with minimal upkeep, especially in freshwater environments.
