🔍 Model Background
The Mercury 50 HP 4-Stroke outboard (2001–2006) was part of Mercury’s early-generation four-stroke lineup, developed in collaboration with Yamaha to offer cleaner emissions, smoother operation, and better fuel economy than traditional 2-stroke models. Based on a 996cc inline-4 Yamaha block, this engine delivered reliable midrange performance for small pontoons, aluminum fishing boats, and utility skiffs.
Available with carbureted or Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) — depending on the year and configuration — the 50 HP 4-Stroke featured mechanical throttle and shift, oil-bathed camshafts, and a compact design that made it suitable for a wide variety of transoms. It was appreciated for its quiet idle, low-vibration operation, and excellent fuel efficiency during trolling and cruising.
This engine laid the groundwork for Mercury’s later in-house 50 HP 4-stroke platform, introduced in 2007. Despite being heavier than its 2-stroke predecessors, the 2001–2006 version gained a loyal following for its durability and smooth performance. Many units are still in service today, supported by strong parts availability and a knowledgeable service network.
