🔍 Model Background

The Mercury 40 Jet outboard (1986–2002) was designed specifically for shallow water navigation, using a jet drive instead of a traditional propeller to allow boats to run in extremely skinny water. Based on Mercury’s proven 3-cylinder 2-stroke 55–60 HP powerhead, the 40 Jet produced 40 jet horsepower (approximately 30% less than the engine’s rated propeller horsepower due to jet pump efficiency).

This engine featured carbureted fuel delivery, oil injection (Precision Blend), and CDM ignition for reliable starting and strong performance across the RPM range. It was a popular choice for river boats, jet sleds, flats boats, and shallow-draft fishing rigs where propellers could be damaged by rocks, sand, or debris.

The 40 Jet was available with tiller or remote steering and came in both manual and electric start configurations. Though heavier and slightly less efficient than propeller-driven models, it gained a loyal following in regions where shallow water access was critical. Many of these units are still in service today, supported by a robust network of jet pump parts and 2-stroke service resources.
