🔍 Model Background

The Mercury 40 HP FourStroke outboard (1999–2003) was one of Mercury’s earliest entries into the mid-range 4-stroke market, produced during the company’s partnership with Yamaha. This model used a 996cc inline-3 Yamaha-based powerhead and was offered in both carbureted and EFI configurations depending on the production year and market.

Designed for quiet operation, smooth performance, and cleaner emissions than its 2-stroke predecessors, the 40 FourStroke was ideal for aluminum fishing boats, pontoons, skiffs, and inflatables. It featured oil-bathed camshafts, a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) design, and mechanical throttle and shift, making it simple to maintain and operate.

Though heavier than comparable 2-stroke engines, the 1999–2003 40 HP FourStroke gained popularity among anglers and boaters looking for fuel efficiency, reliability, and low-noise performance. This model was succeeded by Mercury’s fully in-house 40 HP FourStroke platform in 2004, but many of these Yamaha-era motors are still running strong and supported with widespread parts availability.
