🔍 Model Background

The Mercury 40 HP EFI Big Foot 4-Stroke outboard (2011–2015) was engineered for applications that demanded more thrust at lower speeds — such as pontoons, heavy-duty utility boats, and large aluminum fishing rigs. Built on Mercury’s proven 995cc inline-3 four-stroke platform, the Big Foot variant featured a larger gearcase and higher thrust propeller similar to those found on 90–115 HP models.

This model included Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) for smoother starts, better fuel economy, and reliable all-season performance. With its lower 2.33:1 gear ratio, the Big Foot delivered superior pushing power compared to the standard 40 HP version, making it especially effective on heavy or high-drag hulls.

Paired with mechanical controls and compatible with Mercury’s Smart Craft systems, the 40 HP Big Foot was also designed with ease of maintenance in mind — featuring a no-spill oil filter, color-coded service points, and a maintenance-free valve train. Though eventually phased out in favor of Mercury’s Command Thrust models, the 2011–2015 Big Foot remains a favorite among boaters who need reliable low-end torque in a compact four-stroke package.
