🔍 Model Background

The Mercury 30 Jet outboard (1986–2002) was purpose-built for shallow-water operation, offering reliable jet propulsion for anglers, hunters, and riverboat users navigating skinny water where traditional propeller-driven motors would be damaged or ineffective. Based on the proven Mercury 40 HP 2-stroke powerhead, the 30 Jet produced 30 horsepower at the pump after accounting for the jet drive’s reduced efficiency compared to a propeller.

Equipped with a robust aluminum jet pump assembly and an intake grate designed to minimize debris ingestion, the 30 Jet allowed boaters to run confidently in water as shallow as 4 inches. Its lightweight 2-cylinder or 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine provided strong torque and quick throttle response, making it well-suited for river boats, duck hunting rigs, and jet sleds.

Maintenance was simplified by Mercury’s reliable CDI ignition, loop-charged induction, and modular components shared with other small 2-stroke models. For boaters who needed to go where props couldn’t, the 1986–2002 Mercury 30 Jet remains a trusted and capable shallow-water solution.
