🔍 Model Background

The Evinrude Johnson 48 HP Outboard (1987–1989) was a slightly detuned version of the 50 HP twin-cylinder 2-stroke engine, developed to meet evolving EPA emission regulations and local boating restrictions in some markets. Despite the marginal drop in power, the 48 HP maintained much of the performance and reliability of its 50 HP counterpart.

Powered by a 521cc inline 2-cylinder, loop-charged 2-stroke engine, it offered excellent midrange torque and was ideal for aluminum fishing boats, skiffs, and smaller fiberglass hulls. It utilized CDI ignition and a carbureted fuel system, providing dependable starts and smooth throttle response.

This outboard came standard with electric start and remote steering, and featured power tilt and trim on many models, enhancing convenience and control. Its compact size and relatively light weight made it easy to mount and maintain, while the engine's simplicity translated to low cost of ownership and long-term serviceability.

Though produced for only a few years, the 48 HP quickly earned a solid reputation for fuel economy, reliability, and performance in a wide range of recreational applications. It remains a popular choice in the used outboard market due to its parts compatibility with the 50 HP platform and proven mechanical design.
